The United States has been drawn into a powerful Group B along with reigning world champions Italy, five-time World Cup winners Brazil, and reigning African Cup of Nations winners Egypt for the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup that will be played from June 14-28, 2009, in South Africa. The U.S. kicks off action against Italy on June 15, then faces Brazil on June 18 and finishes group play on June 21 against Egypt.

The United States will open its bid to qualify for its sixth consecutive World Cup finals on Feb. 11 against Mexico at home.  The final round draw for 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying was announced this morning from Johannesburg, South Africa. 

The U.S. Men’s National Team will kick off a busy 2009 schedule when they face Sweden on Saturday, Jan. 24, at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., at 5:30 p.m. PT. The U.S. Men’s National Team recorded their seventh victory in eight 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, downing Guatemala 2-0 in front of 9,303 fans at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colo. Second-half goals from Kenny Cooper and Freddy Adu paced the U.S. during a solid performance in their final match of the Semifinal Round of CONCACAF qualifying.

The finalists for each of the four prestigious U.S. Soccer Athlete of the Year Awards – Male, Female, Young Male and Young Female – have been announced by the sport’s governing body in the United States.

With their ticket to the final round already booked, the U.S. will put some players through a trial by fire in the last match of the semifinal phase.  A largely inexperienced will get to test their mettle against a Guatemala team desperate for a victory that would keep their hopes of advancement alive.
