If you haven't heard yet David Beckham will be playing with AC Milan pretty soon. Right now he is on tour with his MLS team the Los Angeles Galaxy in New Zealand. David Beckham has continued to represent England in international play since he started his career in the US for the Galaxy. He still plans on doing this - which is a big reason why he is going to play with AC Milan for a few months so he can stay in shape and continue to be competitive when England needs him.

"It's important that I keep my fitness up and that's one of the reasons I'm going to Milan for a few months," said Beckham.

Beckham needs to keep up his fitness in order to be ready for international play and it's a great time for AC Milan to pick Beckham up - an unfortunate reason for the timeliness though. The reason AC Milan will be happy to see Beckham, besides the fact that he's a great player, is the fact the Kaka has been out lately with injury. We'll just have to wait and see how he meshes with the rest of the team. I'm sure they will all welcome him.

MLS MVP and MLS Cup MVP and a MLS Cup Champion - the Columbus Crew would be crazy not to do everything they can to get Guilermo Barros Schelotto to stay with the team. The Crew made it official yesterday - they are exercising the option year on Schelotto's 2008 contract. So, Schelotto will be back for another season of play in the MLS with the Columbus Crew.

"Schelotto collected seven goals and 19 assists in 27 games during a prolific 2008 regular season, leading the league in assists by a wide margin. He also set a new Crew record for most assists in a season, eclipsing John Wilmar Perez's 15 in 2001, and finished the season tied for second in MLS history for assists in a season. Five of his assists led to game-winners and his extraordinary performances were recognized with four regular-season MLS Player of the Week selections, MLS Player of the Month honors for August and inclusion on the MLS All-Star Game's inactive roster. His 19 assists this season are the most for an individual in MLS since the 2002 season when Steve Ralston also totaled 19.

"Securing Guille's return was one of our top priorities entering the offseason and we are pleased to get that accomplished," said Crew President & General Manager Mark McCullers. "It goes without saying that he was one of the keys to our championship season and, on top of that, he helps attract international attention to both the club and our region. We look forward to his continued dynamic contributions next season."

Thanks in large part to Schelotto's leadership and playmaking ability, the 2008 regular season was one of the best in Crew history, as the Black & Gold won the Supporters' Shield with a 17-7-6 record and 57 points, shattering the club record for points in a season. Columbus also set new club marks for wins and goals (50) in the post-shootout era (since 2000).

Schelotto continued to be a difference maker in the 2008 MLS Cup Playoffs, as he helped lead the Crew to its first-ever MLS Cup Championship. The Argentine playmaker totaled three assists in the decisive match, a 3-1 victory over New York, setting a new record for assists in an MLS Cup final and earning him MVP honors for the match. In all, Schelotto totaled six assists in four matches for the Crew during the 2008 MLS Cup Playoffs, tying him for the MLS record for most assists in a single postseason.

Since joining the Crew in 2007 from storied Argentinean club Boca Juniors, Schelotto has proven to be one of the best attacking players in the league. He was a member of the 2007 and 2008 MLS Best XI squads and in 49 career MLS regular-season games, he has recorded a whopping 30 assists and scored 12 goals. He was recently named "Sportsman of the Year" by SI Latino and was the subject of a feature story in Sports Illustrated.

Founded by American sports pioneer Lamar Hunt, the Columbus Crew is Ohio's Major League Soccer club, anchoring a diverse sports and entertainment enterprise. One of the league's Charter Members, it is currently the reigning MLS Cup Champion and it has also won MLS Supporters' Shield titles in 2004 and 2008 and the 2002 U.S. Open Cup championship. It recently concluded its 13th season overall and 10th in first-of-its-kind Columbus Crew Stadium." - mlsnet.com

Scoring Summary
Palermo AC Milan
Fabrizio Miccoli (50) Ronaldinho (pen miss 27)
Edison Cavani (59) Ronaldinho (pen 83)
Fabio Simplicio (80)

AC Milan played Palermo in a Serie A game on Sunday and I was not impressed. The final score of the match ended up being 3 - 1 with Palermo on top. AC Milan had their chances never really seemed to be into the game.

What's the deal AC Milan? I didn't even watch the whole match - it was starting to upset me. From what I saw AC Milan was playing horrible defense. There was no communication between players - if I was the goalie I would have been getting pissed at my teammates. I don't know how many times they let the ball just drop in front of them inside the box right in front of the goal. I'm surprised the score wasn't 5 - 0.

Palermo controlled the pace of the game throughout most of the match. The ball seemed to spend much more time in their possession attacking. AC Milan just couldn't get things going. They had a few chances that could have turned the momentum their way, but they couldn't capitalize. Ronaldinho had a chance early in the game (27th minute) to put AC Milan up 1 - 0 but missed a penalty on a very weak effort.

Fabrizio Miccoli put the first ball in the back of the net for Palermo in the 50th minute. It was only 9 minutes later when Palermo added a second goal scored by Edison Cavani. Fabio Simplicio put the game out of reach with a goal in the 80th minute to make it 3 - 0 Palermo. Ronaldinho spoiled a shut-out with a goal on a penalty kick in the 83rd minute.

With the lost AC Milan loses more ground on their city rivals Inter Milan for the top position in Serie A. This leaves AC Milan still in third place - six points off the leaders. The chances were there for AC Milan they just couldn't finish, and Palermo took advantage of a lack luster defensive effort on the part of AC.

Americans hate soccer! Well, that's what a lot of countries outside of the United States of America think. I don't understand why Americans have had such a hard time getting into soccer. Other countries are so passionate about football. The stadiums are pretty much always packed full. Fans are yelling and jumping up and down - what an atmosphere - you don't really see that at any sporting event here in the United States. I'm not putting the United States down or saying we are not passionate about sports - I love my country - we just don't seem to take it to the same level as other countries.

Soccer is slowly catching on in the US - I didn't grow up around soccer. Didn't have a team to play on. No one in my family played - none of my friends played it. The high school I went to just got a soccer team THIS year. If you grow up with no knowledge of something it just makes it easier to hate it then try to learn it or understand it. I only became a soccer fan because I started watching World Cup 2006 on ESPN - and now I follow it a little closer and enjoy playing a pick a game every once in a while.

It's true that main-stream America doesn't like soccer. They think it's boring or there's not enough scoring and action, but we love baseball - which is pretty boring. They don't understand the endurance, control, and skill you have to have to be a professional soccer player. Not to mention because the US isn't 'in to' soccer that much the big media guys aren't going to feed it to us. Sure there is a game once in a while on ESPN and if you're lucky you might get the soccer channel. It's all about the money here and soccer doesn't bring it in in the US like it does elsewhere. Football, baseball, basketball do.

Over the past couple of years I have seen an increase in soccer coverage and soccer commercials. Honestly though, I think it's only because of the increase in the Spanish speaking population here in the US. They grew up with soccer and are more accepting of the sport. Hey but we got David Beckham to come play in the MLS...

There was no perfect ending to the surprising run of the New York Red Bulls through the Major League Soccer Playoffs. They worked their way to the MLS Cup, but there was no more magic left - the Columbus Crew kept them grounded. The Crew was the best team during the regular season came out with the teams first ever MLS Cup with a 3-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls.

Alejandro Mereno, of the Crew, scored the first goal of the match in the 31st minute, slipping a tight-angled shot past Danny Cepero, the Red Bulls goalkeeper. The Red Bulls didn't stop attacking, and evened the score with a goal by John Wolyniec early in the second half. The score didn't stay 1-1 for buy 87 seconds when a Schelotto corner kick was headed in by Chad Marshall to but the Crew up 2-1. Later in the 82nd minute the Crew added some padding to there lead. Frankie Hejduk scored the goal giving Schelotto his third assist in the game.

A well deserving Schelotto was name the MLS Cup Most Valuable Player finishing the game with three assists. This makes him the third player in MLS history to win the league MVP and the MLS Cup Finals MVP honors. A fitting end to a great season for both Schelotto and the Columbus Crew.
